What is WPC Outdoor Decking?

WPC decking, also known as Wood Plastic Composite decking, is a type of decking material that offers a unique combination of plastic and wood. It is made up of approximately 45% timber fibers and 55% High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) along with various additives.

Benefits of WPC Decking

  • Durability: WPC decking possesses improved durability compared to traditional alternatives. Its plastic composition makes it resistant to fading, staining, scratching, and mold, which are common factors that can diminish the lifespan of wood decking. For instance, Vinyl Flooring Singapore Ltd offers a 10-year guarantee on their PRODECK WPC range against issues such as splitting, rotting, cracking, and decay.

  • Low Maintenance: Unlike wood decking, WPC decking requires minimal maintenance. There is no need for sanding, staining, or painting. Occasional cleaning with soap and water is sufficient to maintain the decking for many years. However, in hot weather, water stains might become visible, necessitating a more focused clean.

  • Sustainable: PRODECK WPC decking, like many other WPC solutions, is made from eco-friendly materials. It offers properties similar to wood decking without the negative environmental impact. Some WPC decking solutions are composed of recycled materials or sustainably sourced products, making them more environmentally friendly.

  • Cost-Effective: While WPC composite decking may have a higher upfront cost compared to wood, its long-lasting nature reduces the need for frequent replacements and overhauls. It requires less maintenance than traditional wood decking, leading to fewer expenses over time.

Installation of WPC Decking

The installation process of WPC decking is relatively straightforward:

  1. Workers prepare the substructure and ensure adequate drainage beneath the deck area.

  2. Lay the subframe with a slight gradient of 1% to 1.5% away from walls and lengthwise. Leave a gap from surrounding walls and obstacles to accommodate expansion.

  3. Maintain a gap of at least 30mm between walls or obstacles to allow for expansion of the deck boards.

  4. When fixing the starting clips or connecting clips, pre-drill with a 2.5mm drill bit to prevent subframe cracking, as WPC products have high density.

  5. The substructure should be spaced at maximum 400mm centers and fixed to the concrete using expansion screws at a distance of 30-40cm.

  6. The subframe should overlap by a minimum of 100mm to ensure each deck board has full bearing at each end for runs shorter than 5m.

  7. WPC Double Faced Decking is suitable for upgrades, renovations, or creating new decking areas. It can be installed at any time of the year but is recommended during the spring to autumn period due to more favorable weather conditions. Avoid installing decking in temperatures lower than 5 degrees Celsius.

Disadvantages of WPC Decking

High Initial Cost: WPC decking may be more expensive initially compared to wood. However, the long-term benefits and reduced maintenance costs can provide a good return on investment.

  • Not Real Wood: While WPC composite boards resemble real wood, they are not made from actual wood. If a 100% natural wood solution is preferred, WPC may not meet that criteria. Nonetheless, it provides a realistic wood imitation.

  • Not Completely Maintenance-Free: Although WPC decking requires less maintenance than wood, it still requires occasional cleaning to extend its lifespan. Regular monitoring for debris and washing with soapy water is recommended.
